My Journey: What Being Self-Employed Taught Me About Money

Since becoming self-employed almost two years ago, I’ve truly learned what it means to save money and grow it – without working three different jobs or constantly hustling.

Managing your own income teaches you one important lesson:

„every euro has a purpose“

A purpose is not just saving it.. it is also treating yourself with the right things in the right time!

This blog is for anyone who wants to:

Why Saving Money Matters

saving money for something bigger

Maybe it’s:

🧡Your biggest life goals.

🧡A dream vacation.

🧡A new phone or laptop.

🧡Your future car.

🧡Your first apartment or house.

🧡Financial freedom.

🧡Investing to grow your money.

🧡Donating and helping others.

🧡Simply feeling less stressed about money.

Everyone has a different reason to save.
The important thing is knowing your reason.

If You Struggle to Save Money,
Read This First

Some people don’t have a problem earning money – they struggle to keep it.

Every paycheck disappears within days,
and suddenly you’re wondering where it all went.

Trust me, I understand.

I love buying new things too. Who doesn’t?

But one day I realized something:

saving money for my dreams

The One-Week Rule That Saved Me A LOT OF MONEY:

Whenever I think I need something – for example, a new phone – I don’t buy it immediately.

Instead, I wait one full week

.

After that week, I ask myself:
  • Am I still thinking about it?
  • Is it really affecting my daily life?
  • Do I truly need it, or did I simply want it in the moment?

If I’m still thinking about it after a week,
then it’s probably something I really need or want. Then you should get itt!!

But …if I’ve already forgotten about it,
I just saved myself a lot of money.

Before Buying Something Expensive, Ask Yourself These Questions

Let’s use a new phone as an example.

Before spending hundreds of euros, ask yourself:

ask those questions

If these questions don’t clearly point toward buying a new phone,
then it probably isn’t the right time yet.

And that’s okay.

Living with „less“ for a little longer often makes buying something later feel even more rewarding.

Check Your Monthly Subscriptions

Subscriptions are one of the biggest money drains.

Go through every subscription you pay for and ask yourself:

  • Do I actually use it?
  • Could I cancel it?
  • Would I even notice if it was gone?

Even cancelling just one or two subscriptions can
save hundreds of euros each year.

how to spend time with your friends without spending a fortune
Do you always meet your friends at cafés or restaurants?
Try changing it up.

Instead:

The memories come from spending time together – not from how much money you spend.

Money is simply a tool, not the purpose.

More Easy Ways to Save Money

Here are a few more habits that can make a huge difference:

Sell Things You No Longer Use

➤Look around your home.

Old clothes, electronics, furniture, books, or decorations could become extra money instead of collecting dust.

Track Your Expenses

➤For one week, write down every single euro you spend.

You’ll quickly notice patterns and discover where you’re wasting money without realizing it.

Stop Feeling Like You Have to Pay for Everyone

➤Being generous is wonderful.

But you don’t have to invite everyone or always pay the bill.

Protecting your finances doesn’t make you selfish—it makes you responsible.

Walk or Ride Your Bike More Often

➤Whenever possible, walk or cycle instead of taking public transportation or driving.

You’ll save money while improving your health at the same time.

The 50/30/20 Rule
Everyone Should Know

50/30/20 rule

This simple rule creates balance
while helping you build long-term wealth.

Saving Money Gets Easier Over Time

Saving money feels difficult in the beginning.

You’re changing habits you’ve had for years. But over time it becomes natural.

And the best part?

Treating yourself feels so much better because you know you’ve earned it without hurting your finances.

What to Do Once You've Saved Money

Saving money is only the first step.

Now it’s time to make your money work for you.

Build an Emergency Fund

Before investing, create an emergency fund.

Aim to save three to five months of living expenses. If that feels overwhelming, start small.

So Even saving €300–€500 per month can build a strong safety net over time.

An emergency fund gives you peace of mind and protects you when unexpected expenses happen.

Set Financial Goals

Money grows much faster when it has a purpose.

Write down your goals.

For example:

Short-Term Goals

  • Save for a vacation.
  • Buy a new laptop.
  • Build an emergency fund.

Long-Term Goals

  • Buy your first home.
  • Start investing.
  • Become financially independent.
  • Retire comfortably.

Track your progress in a notebook or use a budgeting app.

Watching your savings grow is incredible motivating.

Invest in Yourself First

One of the best investments you’ll ever make is in yourself.

  • Learn a new skill.
  • Take online courses.
  • Read books about money and business.
  • Start a side project.
  • Build another source of income.
  • Invest into your own business

Knowledge usually provides the highest return over a lifetime.

The more you learn, the more opportunities you’ll create for yourself. „best investment ever“

money is about making better decisions

Saving money isn’t about saying „no“ to everything.

It’s about making smarter choices.+

Ask yourself:

Do I truly need this?

Will this improve my life?

Is this worth delaying one of my bigger goals?

Those small decisions shape your financial future.

Saving money doesn’t mean never enjoying life.

Treat yourself.

Celebrate your progress.

Buy things you genuinely love.

The difference is that now you’re spending intentionally – not impulsively.

That’s what healthy money habits look like.

Final Thoughts

Building wealth isn’t about earning millions overnight.

It’s about managing your money wisely, making
thoughtful decisions, and staying consistent.

Every euro you save today brings you one step closer to the life you want tomorrow.

Start small.

Stay consistent.
